After attacking the market phablettes there only a few months with the Xperia Z Ultra, Sony is now working to develop a more comprehensive range with Xperia T2 Ultra that we test here. It is a little less upscale than its predecessor model, but still enjoys a more than decent datasheet. In particular, it has a HD IPS 6-inch screen (1280 x 720 px), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8928) chipset, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (+ microSD card up to 32GB), a sensor photo 13 MP, capable of shooting Full HD and 4G compatibility (cat 4 to 150 Mb / s). Everything fits in the dimensions of 165.2 x 83.8 x 7.7 mm to 171.7 g.

Ergonomics and design

Phablette requires the Ultra T2 appears quite impressive. However, offering a 6-inch screen, 6.4 inches against the Ultra Z, the Japanese manufacturer has been able to produce a smartphone that can still be used as a standard model in most situations. Where the Z Ultra substantially exceeds a jean pocket, the model tested here knows how to be a little more discreet; although it is impossible to forget completely, because it is still shave the pocket of said jeans. We find the famous OmniBalance design, made of sleek and slightly rounded corners. However, the T2 is not positioned on the high-end materials such as plastic or glass aluminum contour are here replaced by plastic. Only the lateral round button to turn on and off the phablette seems to be real metal.

What is not as dramatic in the plastic in question is very good. The battery is not removable and the SIM and microSD cards are placed in side vents, protected by a cover. There is no need to close it carefully as the Xperia Z, because resistance to water and dust is not the game. The use of plastic has the added advantage of making the product light enough. For phablette means. Where Z Ultra weighs 212 g on the scales, the Ultra T2 only displays 171.7. In addition, this weight watch shows so divided we feel that the smartphone weighs even less than the figure announced. You can imagine that with this type of device, handling with one hand is very complicated, the scope of the thumb covering only two-thirds of the screen better. But with both hands gripping is very good.

Screen

As mentioned otherwise, the Xperia T2 Ultra sees huge HD IPS screen 6 inches for a HD 1280 x 720 px. A density of 245 pixels per inch. Obviously, it is not of offering the finest display screen market. But that does not prevent him from staying pleasant to use, the pixelation is not obvious. Only applications rich text betray this lack a little finesse. For the rest, we measured the Delta E 4.1. Is a more correct score. Note in passing that the Delta E quantifies the difference between perfect colors and those colors on a given screen, and that the result should approach 0. Other measures are in keeping with a very good rate 1320:1 contrast and a brightness of 482 cd / m². Only the color temperature is a bit behind, but not bad at 7345 Kelvin. But the smartphone catches up with excellent latency of 65 ms delay for touch.

Short game comparisons, the display T2 Ultra is not better than the Nokia Lumia 1320, another phablette quite similar to positioning. The screen of the latter has in fact the same size and resolution (6 "in HD), but even better harvest the lab results, measured with a Delta E of 3.2, a contrast ratio of 1107:1 to, maximum brightness 461 cd / m², a color temperature of 6785 Kelvin and a latency of 55 ms. Scores flawless, so close to perfection!

Interface and navigation

In terms of interface, manufacturers generally prefer to innovate on their smartphone featuring first. Sony is no exception to the rule. This is why the T2 Ultra offers no surprise when lit. Neither good nor bad elsewhere. We thus find specific Sony UI, here plated on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Overall, this is a classic overcoat, which does not affect the operation of Android with the usual home screens, tray, etc..

In addition to the modified graphic aspect and its own multimedia applications, Sony has still added "Small Apps". It is actually the smaller format applications, which appear in floating windows that can be moved on the screen at the user's discretion. Obviously, this function makes sense on such a large display. Base, there are nine of these mini-applications, including web browser, calendar, Gmail, calculator and more. We especially liked being able to easily download many others, to increase the number of opportunities offered by these mini-apps. Finally, the user can also create his own, from its widgets.

Reactivity side, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 latter. Chipset advantage of quad-core Cortex-A7, each rotating at 1.4 GHz, an Adreno 305 graphics chip and 1GB of RAM. This set shows robust enough to the device fairly fluid turn. Certainly, you will not feel like a rocket in his hands, but responsiveness in menus and when launches app is good. Similarly, delays are quite rare. In short, the Ultra T2 correctly fulfill its purpose, but without showboating.

Photo

This kind of model midrange, manufacturers usually make money on the camera sensor. In this case, we do not actually find the same 20.7 megapixel sensor that fits all recent smartphones range Z, namely Z1, Z2 and Z1 Compact. That of T2 Ultra still offers 13 megapixels. In theory, this is more than enough to capture good quality images. In use, if the sensor does not equal the best 13 megapixel, it remains quite correct. His photographs offer including very decent contrast and a good level of detail.

As you can see in our face to face, it is however a bit behind in terms of color fidelity, his white pulling a little to the blue compared to models like the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy S4 or Huawei Ascend P7, also equipped with sensors of 13 megapixels. But the Ultra T2 does not have to be ashamed of its performance and is recommended; as the lighting conditions are good at least. Because when the light is more rare, its performance falls logically. But, again, the results are in line with what most competitors offer. Is a notch below the best in the genre such as LG G2, iPhone 5s or Nokia Lumia 1020.

Multimédia

Xperia T2 Ultra benefits from the multimedia universe Sony at full speed. Found including shops manufacturer to obtain movies, music or games; against the hard cash of course. In consultation, the video player of the device is particularly distinguished by its highly successful interface. He further connects to the Gracenote database to get information and photos related to video sheltered in the phone and memory card. This works great for movies, less for the playoffs. In addition, the player in question is not really at the party when it comes to compatibility with the most popular time formats. It does not penalize the smartphone to the extent there are many free applications such as MX Player that can remedy this weakness. But in the end, fans of movies and series. Mkv example will not use the native player. In all cases, the smartphone bed without problem files in Full HD 1080p. Finally, it is of course obvious that the screen is a huge asset for video playback. Certainly it does not display the finesse of a Full HD model, but its record remains excellent when it comes to watching a movie or a series.

On the audio side, the level of the headphone output is quite low, as often with Sony. It is sufficient to supply wholesale headphones, this smartphone will bother with a big helmet, especially if its impedance is high. Other measurements performed in our laboratory on the headphone output does not show concern. However, we regret - a lot - that the plug for the mini-jack connector is located on the right side of the device, not on the high and low bands. Finally, the built-in speaker is installed behind a slot "screened" at the rear of the hull. When the smartphone is laid flat, the sound is slightly mitigated by the acute, which ultimately is not bad, because if the acoustic power is important, in return, the sound is loud and focused on high frequencies.

Autonomy

Between its 3000 mAh battery and therefore its correct specifications, but not flamboyant, we are hopeful that the Xperia T2 Ultra offers a decent battery life. The least we can say is that it does not disappoint! With a score of 72919 s our app Battery Benchmark test, it is more or less in the fourth place of the most durable smartphones, behind Xperia Z1 Compact, Samsung and HTC One GS5 M8. Such a score gives theoretically three full use of the Sony phablette days. In use, it is even more impressive. While these three days remain a fantasy. But for everyday use, the Ultra T2 still allows to hold two real days away from a power without worrying unduly optimize its autonomy in the settings. From this point of view, he even did a little better than other smartphones mentioned above. Excellent performance so.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra telephony side
One of the peculiarities of this phablette is to be immediately available in two versions on the French market. The model we tested is dual-SIM compatible with 3G + DC-HSDPA (up to 42 Mb / s). But there is also a single SIM 4G milling. The phone features of the beast prove the classical and effective. Management of the two SIM cards is a model of its kind and will not itself open to criticism. It is possible whenever determining from which card must be issued a call or send an SMS. Sound is also very good, the calling and called parties agreeing perfectly, noise-free, micro-cut or breath.

Highlights
The overall record of the screen is correct, even if it is not Full HD.
Good manufacturing quality and lightness of the device.
The fluidity and the decent of the reactivity of the system together.
The excellent battery life.
Capture picture / video across quite correct.
The choice between a dual-SIM version or a version of 4G.

weaknesses
The side button for the photo is too small.
Mini-jack connector on one side.
Audio output power shortage.
