After long observed market phablettes, Acer has finally leap by announcing in mid-2013, a first model, the Liquid S1, then a second a few weeks later, the Liquid S2. It is the latter, the most exclusive of the two devices, we will test here. He uses the same technical characteristics as the barrel upscale 2013.

Full HD IPS screen is undoubtedly the showpiece with its diagonal of 6 inches for a resolution of 1920 x 1080 px, with a density of 367 pixels per inch. It is reinforced by Corning Gorilla Glass protection 3. Under the hood, the manufacturer has opted for a chipset Qualcomm quadruple heart 800, clocked at 2.2 GHz and supported by 2GB of memory (RAM) and a graphics chip ( GPU) Adreno 330. Uptake photo and video is entrusted to a 13 megapixel back sensor, which proves capable of filming in 1080p Full HD and UHD-4K. Finally, the device shows full connectivity, including NFC and 4G compatibility in addition to the usual Wi-Fi n / ac, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS (GLONASS). Although the battery is not removable, it still appreciates the presence of a microSD card. All runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and displays impressive dimensions, with 166 x 86 x 9 mm and above 231 g on the scales. Acer Liquid S2 was released in the beginning of the year, at the recommended rate 549 €. But its price has fallen since. So much so that it now is around 400 € on average, and sometimes even to 350 €.

Ergonomics and design3/5

If the design of smartphones and are very generally similar, Acer has made the effort to try out the Liquid S2 competition from that point of view. The Taiwanese manufacturer has not revolutionized anything. But found on his S2 some elements of graphic language that gives it an identity, such as strapping speaker and the red fence. The row of touch-sensitive keys below the screen is manufacturer-specific. Finally, the back of the unit, there is a crown consisting of four LED flash around the camera sensor. For the rest, the appreciation of the design will remain primarily a matter of taste. However, we can say objectively that the quality is at the rendezvous. Acer has not opted for noble materials. But the plastic used here is of good quality.

Table darkens a bit in terms of ergonomics. For starters, the machine is heavy. Even very heavy. Nobody expects to handle a lightweight when it comes to phablette. However, Acer breaks the record of the heaviest cell phone with this S2 Liquid accusing no less than 231 g on the scales! This represents respectively 22 g and 14 g of more than1520 Lumia or a HTC One max , however also with screens of 6 inches. Comparison with the champion of the category is more eloquent as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 weighs "only" 178 g, 53 g less than the S2. To be fair, note that embeds still display a slightly smaller (5.7 inches). But this is not enough to explain the gap between the two weights. Before continuing, note that we phablettes users and we are handling all day long for years. We thought so take the fold after a few days of use, but nothing did. Other ergonomic concern; the button to lock / unlock the device is too small, so it happens regularly that gropes to find it, even after having made its mark on the device.

Screen4/5

The undeniable bravura of this Liquid S2 is fetching the side of the screen and its huge 6-inch diagonal. Although it is not the first country to venture diagonal excessive, the S2 does not only remains the eighth smartphone to display 6 inches or more, along with the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, Sony Xperia Z Ultra , Nokia Lumia 1320 and 1520, HTC Huawei Ascend Mate Max One and LG G Flex. And yet, in the lot, only three also offer the same Full HD (1920 x 1080 px) the Liquid S2. But size is not everything. Sub probes our lab, the Acer smartphone is doing quite well, even if not perfect. It thus shows a Delta E of 4.5, a very good contrast ratio of 1402:1, a just correct brightness 389 cd / m² and a decent color temperature of 6041 K. The Android smartphone has the characteristics closer to those of S2 Liquid is the HTC One Max. Its screen shows better contrast (1500:1), significantly more light (500 cd / m²), but with a colorimetric and a temperature of more perfectible colors, respectively measured at 5.4 (dE) and 7415 K.

Interface and Navigation5/5

Once is not custom, Acer provides its own user interface here. Since he embarked on the adventure of Android smartphones, the Taiwanese manufacturer seemed to grope in the field, changing his tune repeatedly. This time, so it offers a fairly lightweight interface, which alters in any way the mode of operation of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean adopted here. We thus find the paradigm home screens + applications menu. Acer has added an overview of said home screens, and floating widgets. These sometimes act as shortcuts to some apps, or they allow outright to display a smaller screen versions. Finally, we also appreciate that the manager multitasking is now directly accessible via one of the three physical buttons below the screen.

All rotates perfectly fluid. This is not really surprising since the smartphone features a chipset quadruple heart Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, clocked at 2.2 GHz with 2 GB of memory (RAM) and a graphics chip (GPU) Adreno 330. Though it is no longer the latest generation, this configuration is that of the more powerful 2013 models. It therefore offers a beautiful reactivity Liquid S2, since this phablette never slows down. In addition, all 3D games, even the most demanding, turn fully on the platform.

Multimedia4/5

Between the chipset and overpowered Dante screen, Liquid S2 is perfectly equipped to enjoy photos and videos. There is obviously no need for a Snapdragon 800 to be able to play videos in Full HD 1080p. But its presence does no harm to the case. Not surprisingly, the smartphone proved able to read the vast majority of video files that we have thrown him in pasture, all formats, codecs and resolution combined. The only problematic cases just a few videos with subtitles, or files with AC3 audio track. It should then fall back to one of the many free applications that abound on Google Play. Côté audio, outside of a relatively low level of output on the headphone jack, Acer Liquid S2 behaved correctly in our measures. The most neutral results were obtained when the Dolby Digital Plus were disabled. They remain quite artificial listening. However, they have the advantage of providing a parametric EQ and effectssurround , which can be fun and useful in some cases. The integrated offering, meanwhile speaker, a sound balance and a decent power, not too garish. In short, if the Liquid S2 does not compete with the big names of the genre in terms of audio playback, it still fits in the middle.

Photo3/5

On paper, the phablette Acer promises a lot with its 13 megapixel camera sensor, flanked by four LED flash and capable of shooting 4K-UHD. What about in practice? Taking a look at our photo face to face , you will notice immediately that produces shots that take way too towards yellow. This can certainly be corrected afterwards, but how many users will really reflex? The level of detail also appears perfectible when compared to the best 13 megapixel sensors competition. It remains decent in absolute terms.

Test Acer Liquid S2

Finally, the low light performance are average. As for quad flash, it serves its purpose and actually offers more than other smartphones reach. All without "burning" topics closely. Beautiful performance. Especially because, paradoxically, flash pictures do less to yellow! Finally, a word about the videos captured in-4K UHD. Their record is fairly clean, with a level of detail interesting. But he clearly has nothing stunning, especially the autofocus often shows hesitant ...

Autonomy4/5

Despite the very large 3300 mAh battery, autonomy Liquid S2 is a bit disappointing to use. While the smartphone will score quite honorable 54512 s in our test application Battery Benchmark. Which should earn him more than two days of use. However, in practice, we are relatively far. Warning, the camera takes a big day away from a power smoothly and he will remain the same under the sole. It is therefore about a day and a half, or be very efficient to consider the two days of use.
